Watsu

Freeing the Body in Water

Can you imagine floating, supported in warm, soothing water, being safely held and feeling the water creating a stretch that would be difficult in gravity. Returning continually to the breath, gradually gaining a wonderful sense of inner peace, transcending time and finding complete freedom. Watsu's stretching floatation and massage is based on the principles of Shiatsu done in warm water, which conducts energy. Being held brings relaxation and nurturing with an intimate intensity to this work. The weightless atmosphere and the hydrostatic pressure of the water is beneficial for many conditions - stiffness, soreness, limited range of motion, injury rehabilitation, neurological disorders, especially pregnancy, as well as other conditions that lead to swelling.

Watsu was developed in Northern California by Harold Dull at Harbin Hot Springs in 1980. Taking his Shiatsu education and working in the pools at Harbin, a unique form of bodywork emerged. Watsu's physical and stress reducing effects are deep, long lasting and profound. This is an effective form of massage, for people who are experiencing a wide range of disabilities and conditions. Which is why Watsu is now being offered in spas, health clubs, hospitals and physical therapy facilities around the world. To find a practitioner in your area go to the Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association (WABA) at www.waba.edu, in the United States, and www.watsu.com, worldwide.

I was introduced to Watsu in the summer of 2002. I immediately realized what a profound effect this could have on a person. Within a month I was enrolled in Watsu school. As part of the learning process I have received many Watsu sessions and found my first impressions to be true. This was the start of a journey that has transformed my life. As a direct result I have experienced a greater depth and connection in work, relationships and my own spiritual journey, which has become integrated into a philosophy of right livelihood. An important part of my life is to share this with others, for giving Watsu is as rewarding as receiving. A dream that was born has now been realized as I offer Watsu and Waterdance at a beautiful private facility (which is also my home), in Fortuna.

Back to being afloat, drifting, supported in a pool of pleasure - muscles gentled, mind calmed, spirit open and free. No sound but the water, no time but the present. No sensations but the tensionless, supportive ease that allows your body to relax deeper and deeper. So treat yourself to this unique, restorative, nurturing experience.
